Masters in Media Technology

Technological convergence is making mass communication – a more sophisticated & complex discipline. The rapid technological advancement and with globalization of contents at equal speed has heightened the challenges to the media organization thus demands dynamic & qualified workforce. Therefore, a quality mass communication education is must to meet the challenges and exploit the opportunities offered in 21st century. Recognizing the current demand of qualified professional media persons in the Nepalese media sector, Shepherd College offers a two-year full-time Masters in Media Technology (MMT) degree program.

The Master of Arts (M.A) degree in Media Technology is intended for the candidates working in any communication-related field, and seeking to advance to a position with broader perspective. This The MA in Media Technology has specialized concentration areas available to qualified individuals with interest and background in communication industry.

The 63 credit hour MMT program is designed to meet the global standards in media practices. Shepherd College supports the teaching-learning in all possible way; the faculty members are highly qualified & experienced as well as the college has ample facilities for practical assignments.

ADMISSION ELIGIBILITY

Applicants seeking admission to MMT studies must have a Bachelors Degree in any discipline (faculty/stream) from an accredited educational institution. Work experience is preferred, but not essential.

CAREER PROSPECTS

MMT is an internationally portable degree. Upon successful completion of the MMT program, students typically start career in media houses, production companies, advertising & PR agencies as in I/NGOs and variety of corporate organizations as media related activities.

Globally, demand for MMT degree-holders is enormously increasing, especially in Nepal where a large number of media organizations are functioning without fully qualified media personnel. The MMT program at Shepherd prepares students to join at the middle and senior levels in any media related functional areas, i.e. reporting, editing, feature production, radio & television content producers, communication executives & officers in business, government or social organization.

EVALUATION MODE

Students will be evaluated in two methods; as Internal Assessment and External examination. The Internal Assessment will be conducted the Shepherd college and would conduct the testing of theoretical as well as practical aspect of each courses. The concerned instructor and the colleges’ academic department have developed testing methods which may vary from course-to-course.

External Examination is the End-semester examination to be conducted by the Purbanchal University, to test the students on the theories, concepts and other elements course as prescribed in each course syllabus through written examinations at the examination center designated by the university.

Program Curriculum

The required 63 credit hours for Master of Arts in Media Technology include the subjects as listed below. The degree is designed to complete in four semesters over two years. Total 54 credit hours are divided into 3 areas; Core Courses, Emphasis Courses and Electives as below;

Core Courses : 36 Credit Hours
Emphasis Courses : 18 Credit hours
Elective Courses  9 Credit hours
Total  : 63 Credit Hours

Areas of Emphasis

Students should choose one of the three areas of study among Radio, Television or print media as concentration area in their third semester. Total of 18 credit hours i.e. Four courses with 3 Credit Hours and one course with 6 credit hours from single area of study is required to earn MMT degree in desired area of emphasis.

Elective

Students have choice of total 9 credit hours or two courses with 3 three Credit Hours and One course with 6 credit hours in their 1st and 4th semester respectively. Selection of elective course is based on students’ interest and command over language and subject matter. Students may choose either MT 4140 Lekhan Kala: Nepali or MT 4150 Art of Writing: English in their first semester and, MT 4430 Professional Practicum / Internship or MT 4440 Media Production Project in the fourth semester.

Course Duration

The normal duration of the program is 24 months of 4 semesters.

Classes are held for five days in a week, class timings will be with 6:00 a.m-10:30a.m. with 15 -25 minutes break in between.

Rules for fees and charges:

  • The fees cover all payables to the college and to the university, including examination and annual charges.
  • Fees are payable during the first week of each semester, Rs. 20/- per week will be charged as late fees for each subsequent weeks thereafter.
  • Shepherd has a policy of generally maintaining the published fees schedule for the relevant batch without revision. The published fees will be revised only in extremely compelling circumstances without prior notice.
  • No part of the fees already paid will be refunded at any case.
  • In case of re-taking/re-registration of courses, applicable fees will be charged and the students will have to pay the university examination fees to pay such course re-taken/re-registered.
